Securing European venture capital brings a founder into a different conversation. Ambition matters, but so do the quality of the evidence, the economics of growth and the team’s ability to deliver. The investment story must survive questions that a persuasive presentation can briefly avoid.
This reflection draws on fundraising experience, with investor identities and transaction details withheld. A useful preparation exercise is to ask whether the narrative, the operating data and the financial plan tell the same story. Where they diverge, the work begins before the next investor meeting.
The learning
Fundraising also consumes management time. A clear process helps protect the business while the raise is under way: define the milestones the money should buy, understand the alternatives and keep ownership of the operating plan. An interested investor is a potential partner, not yet a committed source of capital.
