06 / EXIT & OWNERSHIP

You sold the business. Who runs it now?

A transaction changes the working relationship, as well as the ownership.

Career reflection · Company details withheld · Published 13 October 2026

An ownership change involving European private equity creates a visible milestone. The less visible work is translating the deal into how the business will actually operate: what will be measured, who can make which decisions and how the leadership team will be supported and challenged.

This reflection draws on experience around investment and ownership change. Specific buyers, values and deal structures are withheld. The lesson is to understand the life after completion with the same care given to reaching it. The value-creation plan has to become an operating plan people can deliver.

The learning

Commercial priorities, reporting, incentives and leadership capacity should connect. If the investment case depends on a faster pace of change, ask what resources and authority will make that pace possible. A well-prepared transition clarifies expectations while there is still time to resolve differences.

An edited learning note based on career reflections supplied by Steven Myers. Identifying details have been withheld; this is not a transcript of a private member discussion.
