09 / PARTNERSHIP & JUDGEMENT

The wrong partner can cost more than the wrong plan.

A compelling opportunity can hide an untested relationship.

Career reflection · Company details withheld · Published 13 October 2026

Choosing business partners very carefully is one of the founder’s strongest career lessons. Shared enthusiasm is easy at the start. A more useful test is how people handle uncertainty, difficult information and an outcome that favours one person more than another.

This reflection deliberately withholds names, disputes and private circumstances. It does not imply misconduct by a past partner. The learning is to examine the working relationship before relying on it: values, appetite for risk, time commitment, responsibilities and the ability to disagree without making the business unworkable.

The learning

Practical conversations can reveal more than broad assurances. Explore who makes a difficult call, how a deadlock would be resolved, what happens if someone wants to leave and how an uneven contribution would be handled. Written arrangements matter, and so does observing whether the behaviour matches the agreement.

An edited learning note based on career reflections supplied by Steven Myers. Identifying details have been withheld; this is not a transcript of a private member discussion.
